Trone History In Sprinting Will Be Honored Friday At Williams Grove

10K To Win John Trone Tribute Race Is May 24

Mechanicsburg – The career of long-time sprint car owner John Trone of York will be feted this Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway when the $10,039-to-win John Trone Tribute race for 410 sprint cars is staged as part of the Hoosier Diamond Series and presented by HVAC Distributors.

The total purse for the 25-lap main event for the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 sprints is nearly $30,000!

The Trone name’s history in the sport dates back to 1955 when John’s father Ray Trone of York began fielding a No. 39 car on local dirt tracks flying the banner of the family business, Trone’s Sunoco.

Ray Trone experienced success for the next 17 years with drivers like Dave Leppo, Bobby Hersh, Johnny Dubendorf, Ed Zirkle, Tommie Spriggle and others.

However the elder Trone retired from the sport midway through the 1972 season and the name disappeared from the scene until John Trone emerged in a sponsorship role with TJ Stutts some 33 years later.

Trone became a full-fledged owner for Stutts beginning in 2007 and for the majority of the last 17 years has kept the familiar No. 39 on the track and in winner’s circles.

At Williams Grove Trone scored the 2012 overall track title with Greg Hodnett at the wheel to go along with the Diamond Series title the same season.

Trone and Hodnett were also the Pennsylvania Speedweek titlists in 2013, Keystone Cup champions in 2012, Thunder on the Hill champions at Grandview Speedway in both 2012 and 2013 and series champs at Selinsgrove Speedway in 2012.

Other Trone winners through the seasons aside from Hodnett have been Stutts, Keith Kauffman, Doug Esh, Tim Glatfelter, Cory Haas and Chase Dietz.

Additional drivers have included Brent Marks, Alan Krimes, Cale Thomas, Jason Solwold, Justin Peck, Cameron Smith, Troy Wagaman Jr, Kyle Moody, Garrett Williamson, Dominic Melair and Lynton Jeffrey.

Australian standout Callum Williamson is the current pilot of Trone’s mount at Williams Grove and across the region.

Several Trone drivers including Stutts, Dietz, Haas, Wagaman and Callum Williamson plus mechanic Kevin Frey will gather in the infield prior to the Trone Tribute race on Friday for interviews, beginning at approximately 5:40.

Adult general admission for May 24 is $30 with students ages 13-20 admitted for just $10.

Kids ages 12 and under are always admitted for FREE at Williams Grove Speedway.
