World Of Outlaws Tune Up 31st Mitch Smith Memorial Friday At Williams Grove

Race pays $8,080.80 to win, 358 sprints also in action

Mechanicsburg – Williams Grove Speedway will present Thrivent Financial Night featuring the make-up 31st annual Mitch Smith Memorial for the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 sprint cars coming up this Friday, July 19 at 7:30 pm.

The HJ Towing & Recovery 358 sprints are also on the racing program with gates opening at 5:30 pm.

After losing the race to rain on July 5, the make-up Mitch Smith Memorial will be part of Thrivent Financial World of Outlaws Tune Up Night on July 19.

Using the usual outlaws format to set the starting field, the 30-lap main event will pay $8,080.80 to win in honor of the oval’s 80th anniversary racing season and the late Mitch Smith.

As another way of honoring Smith, there will be NO increase in the scheduled admission for the special show that will also be part of the 2019 Diamond Series for the sprint cars.

Adult general admission for the show is set at $17 with youth ages 13-20 admitted for just $10. Kids ages 12 and under are always admitted for FREE at Williams Grove Speedway.

As has become standard for all time trial races at the Grove, Fast Tees Screenprinting of Thompsontown will pay $300 as the Fast Tees Fast Time Award to the driver that sets quick time over the Smith Memorial field.

Thrivent Financial sponsors the No. 10 limited sprint car driven by Troy Rhome of Marysville, a regular campaigner at Williams Grove Speedway who will be in action on Friday night.

Fans can visit the Thrivent Financial hospitality tent in the infield on Friday to register to win a 1/18th scale remote control No. 10 Troy Rhome sprint car valued at over $200.

Thrivent will also be giving away coloring books, crayons, magnets and more at its display.

The racing event will also feature hundreds of giveaways for fans including Pennsylvania Posse towels at the general admission gates.

The rescheduling of the Mitch Smith Memorial will allow the prestigious race to continue its longevity at the oval, first run in 1989 and won by Stevie Smith.

Richard D. “Mitch” Smith was the original “Mr. Excitement” of Pennsylvania sprint car lore.

At Williams Grove Speedway alone he ended his four-decade long career in 1978 with 27 sprint car wins and nine super modified victories.

But overall on his career, his checkered flags added up to 179.

Smith retired from the sport in 1978 and in 1988 at the age of 58 was felled by a massive heart attack.

The Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals featuring the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars Series will hit the track on Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27.
